Latest on Pending Retirement of SETI Classic

No dates are locked in, but here's the plan of attack as outlined by one of the SETI BOINC developers in response to the question "when is SETI Classic going away" on the SETI BOINC forums:

There are several ducks we need to get in a row, but basically any day now we'll embark on the first step, which is to tell all new users to sign up for BOINC instead of the classic SETI@home.

Some of the aforementioned ducks include another database server transfer, a whole server closet reorganization, some web site updating, last minute bug fixing (and an ensuing new client release), a mass e-mail to all the old SETI@home users, etc.
This can (and is) actually all happening in parallel.

The main objective (a new database server) has already been completed and it is handling 25% of the expected full load without breaking a sweat.

Allow me to clarify:

When originally planning load on our system, we determined that we needed to at least be able to send out one million results a day. This was our goal. Right now we are generating and sending out 250,000 results a day without taxing our database server.

Will there be other unexpected bottlenecks? Probably. We'll find and fix those as new users ramp up.

What happens if user interest is so high that there is a greater demand than one million results a day? Maybe we'll generate more, but remember the real beauty of BOINC (and one of the reasons it was created) - you can crunch on other projects if any particular project is temporarily out of work.

Crunch on folks--I'm guessing May at the earliest.

Thanks for that!

I notice that tonight, at least, I was only able to upload a few WUs before not being able to get another connection...for hours now.  I checked their website, and didn't see any outage news or anything, and Phoenix was wondering if Today Was The Day.... :o

So, your post was most welcome  :)

They had a power outage.

On the seti1 page at the top they message has been changed saying that they have begun the change over.

"NOTICE: SETI@home is in the process of switching to new software called BOINC, which lets you run other projects (like Climateprediction.net and Einstein@home) on your computer as well as SETI@home. Please visit our new SETI@home/BOINC web site.

They had some db corruption when the power went down. Said the db server was in the lab and not the server closet so wasn't on the UPS. How dumb is that??!!

I could see it maybe if they were just setting it up and left it there for a few hours while configuring it or something but that's just stupid to leave it there for weeks unprotected.

Thank goodness for SetiStash  :o   Thanks to it, none of my machines were idle during the outage  :)

On a side note, Phoenix notices that TLG just dipped in to the 5 hr block of time-per-WU-crunched  :)

FaD is looking for drugs for cancer, HIV, bioterrorism anitidotes, etc.

If you haven't tried it you should check it out :)
