The Economy-- work, Ranting...
« on: January 13, 2010, 11:11:32 AM »

Remember when, long ago when as a techie you could just walk away from a job and take one of the hundred other jobs wanting you?  Damn I miss being able to tell the people I work for to take a flying leap!!!   :-\

So, I just had an hour long argument due to someone not knowing the difference between Disaster Recovery and High Availablity.

Our DR is Virtual, and I would not give someone a physical server for a "DR" server, so they threw a fit.  What they actually wanted was an HA cluster, but that is not what they asked for.  They simply kept saying they wanted a physical server for prod, and another physical for DR. (Along with virtuals for dev, stage, qa, blah blah blah).  They kept saying it would NEVER WORK because it was virtual.  I kept asking them what they had been smoking?   ;D

The word "Cluster" never came into it until they involved everyone's bosses because I would not, according to them, build them a cluster for prod.  Now, don't you think they would want clusters all the way through the environments, since there are many things that could be different between a standalone SQL server and a clustered SQL server?  nope, just the Prod and DR, um, I mean prod HA?  I also asked about DR, and they just looked at me blankly.

Guess I should have just built a cluster with one physical and one virtual just to F with them.. :-)

Oh well, back to it.

LOL.  Are they clueless on everything?  Wow.  Not knowing the difference between COB/DR and High Availability is almost criminal.  Two completely different things.  Wow.

Hey, have fun.   ;)

And as of TODAY, I am living the dream you speak of, being able to walk away, as a techie, from a job I hate with a passion!  I was unemployed for a few months, finally had to do SOMETHING, so ended up in NJ working for quite possibly the worst company in existence, at least that I have come across, since 1988 when I started consulting/contracting.  Already have one new job offer in hand after just a phone interview, in Chicago, and very likely another coming Friday or shortly thereafter in DC.  And guess what.  The company I work for in NJ has NO IDEA...but I am leaving here Friday morning to go to DC, then back to my home in Atlanta for a week or two break, then either to Chicago or DC after that for the new job.  And these guys have not one clue.  Tomorrow is my last day at this wretched place I work at now.  Not even going to give a two-week notice.  Not even going to tell anyone.  I plan to submit my final hours and a "I resign" email to my consulting company right before I leave tomorrow.  This is going to be SWEEEEEEEET for me, you have NO idea!!!!!!  And I just found out about the firm offer in Chicago today!  It was like a load was lifted off my shoulders.  By the way, Chicago is where my girlfriend is... No person, no force, nothing, could wipe the smile off my face all afternoon once I found out about that offer in hand.  And not one person there has a single clue this is about to happen.  I love it.  Tomorrow is going to be almost as sweet as today was...

So, not to hijack your thread, sorry about that.  My point is that a true miracle just happened for me.  I hope it does for you too.

And, for the first time in quite a while, I am once again happy.  Been so long I almost forgot what that was like.
