An update
« on: December 08, 2009, 09:13:56 PM »

Well, you all know my circumstances and why my crunching numbers have been way down recently.  Been a while, wanted to give an update for you.

I have a job waiting for me, and was actually supposed to start yesterday, Monday, but I called and delayed a week.  Reason is to give my Hail Mary One-Last-Chance to work out where I'm at...Atlanta.  I slam dunked a phone screen with them last week, went in for a really intense highly technical interview for a few hours with three people asking questions, today.  They were subject matter experts, and their questions were WAAAAAAAY down in the weeds.

I didn't miss a single one.  I ACED it.  I followed up with questions to them as a matter of fact, led them down paths they've been thinking of but never been.  I explained how those paths could be of benefit to them.

After that, I had a follow up interview with the original phone-screener, the hiring manager, who grilled me for another half hour with much higher-level questions.  I think I did well.  She told me they had already scheduled 2 or 3 more interviews with other candidates this week, but hopefully would reach a decision by the end of the week.

I am hopeful that I can remain where I'm at, be re-employed in the Atlanta area, very soon.  If so, I hope that I can, as the quote went in "Armageddon", "Kick the tires and light the fires!!!!!!!" once again!!!!!!

The job that is already waiting on me is 100% mine.  But it's in Newark, NJ, pretty much the last place on the planet I'd like to be.  I have another thing brewing still with the US Dept of Energy in DC...I'd rather be in DC then NJ...so I will probably go ahead and fly there on Thursday (DC) for an onsite interview with them.  They've actually held the job for me...I worked with the hiring manager previously...he knows me, knows what I can do, knows my situation, as I have been honest with him (I want to stay in Atlanta!!!!)

So, good news for me, one way or another.  Just wanted to share.   :)

Thank you my friends.  As an addendum, I now have another last second chance at going to Pleasonton, CA, which I gather is just by San Fran / San Jose area.  Have phone interview tomorrow, and am told that they expect to make almost an immediate decision, tomorrow.  Hell, I'd rather be there than Newark if the choice came down to those two, but I'd still rather remain in Atlanta, and I've not heard back yet about that.  I will ace the interview tomorrow, I have no doubt, and given that, I might have three choices, immediately, in front of me within the next day or two.  I'll stay in ATL if possible, next, I'll pick CA.  And the NJ job is already wrapped up big time.  I view that as my last line of survival.  The DC job?  The guy called me today and said he is in no rush, and that if I end up in NJ, we can work out a day for me to go there to interview.  It would all be on me, expense-wise, and I figure that rather than spending $500 for a ticket now for the airfare, I would rather be gainfully employed and probably spend much less after the holiday season and a shorter route.  So, still, it's all going to work out for me, one way or another.

Atlanta?  Newark?  SF?  If Newark, after that (shortly)...DC?  Who knows.  Stay tuned....

Not really excited about it, but Newark it is, looks like.  I failed in my last chance to stay in Atlanta.  Not sure how I did in the interview for the SF job but have not heard back from them.

It's always darkest before the dawn....

But then again... Having a job, even in Newark, when 17% of the country is unemployed has to be a good thing.

I hear ya Bob.

But I'm still really disappointed about the Atlanta thing.  They dinged me apparently for something I actually knew very well but it never came up specifically in the interview.  They asked me how my SAS coding skills were and familiarity with SAS macros.  I'm not a SAS coder, so I don't know really squat about SAS macros, and I said as much.  They told the recruiter that my lack of knowledge of an EXISTING SAS macro, to back up the metadata repository, the heart of SAS, would not allow me to be able support SAS environments.

I'm fuming about that.  They NEVER mentioned anything about my familiarity with EXISTING SAS macros....I thought they were asking could I WRITE them.  Two TOTALLY different things!  Unbelievable.

I just sent this response to the recruiter, not that it will do any good:

Hi Joe,

In response to xxx-company, I ask that you forward my following response to woman-manager (edit: she's the hiring manager at xxx-company):

I am disappointed that I did not meet your criteria for becoming a SAS Administrator with xxx-company.  I was not aware that you were looking for a candidate with strong SAS development experience, as it seems to me.  Regarding the SAS Administration abilities, I thought I did well in my interview with Mike, Don, and Carmen.  Yes, I was asked my knowledge of SAS macros and coding, and I admitted that my knowledge in that area is pretty limited.  But if you meant my knowledge of using existing SAS macros for day-to-day support of environments, that is another thing entirely, and that was not made clear to me.

During my four years at xxx Consulting, when I traveled to many client sites around the country and the world, one of the things I always did was to implement backup/restore procedures for the OMR - the Metadata.  SAS 9.1.3 doesn't do that for you; SAS 9.2 finally has a provision for that.

It was mentioned to me that I would need to be able to work with macros in SAS such as omabakup, for backing up the repository, and that never specifically came up in the interview process.  Had I known, I could have told everyone that yes, I am well familiar with that macro, and have used it for years.  But knowledge of SAS coding for that macro in particular is of no importance whatsoever, really.  There is no customizations to it other than supplying host name/IP, port for the OMR, SAS Admin user id and password, and location of the backups.  As I said, I always included that at client sites as something extra.  I am enclosing an example.

I hope you might give further consideration to me.  As I mentioned to you, I am willing to immediately begin studying for and pursuing SAS certification in SAS Programming.  I never said I was certified in that area.  I am a SAS certified EBI SAS Administrator, however, and did very well at the SAS Institute itself in that role.

If nothing else, consider what I am sending to you as a gift.  This series of shell scripts, SAS scripts, and the control file for user-specification of generations of backups to keep, etc., work tremendously well.

Thanks,

xxx-me and contact info

Like I said, it will do no good.  I'm pretty sure the tech recruiter guy won't even bother to forward that on to the hiring manager in fact.  But seems I got royally screwed here for all the wrong reasons.  They would be damn lucky to have someone like me, and they don't even know it.  Even after I aced the interview, very in-depth.

Just another Pointy Haired Boss out there, I guess.  Wow.

Addendum:  Since I'm having to go to NJ (driving Saturday), I will not be taking my farm with me.  I have no Earthly idea when I will be able to stand up my farm again right now, unfortunately.  For the foreseeable future, my crunching numbers will be really, really dismal.  Sorry 'bout that.  Someday, I'll be back.

This was my trip report to my on again, off again girlfriend who is in Chicago (for months now  :( )

Long trip honey.

Left house in Suwanee at 9:19 AM, just now booted my laptop in Days Inn hotel room at what, 1:11 AM the next day.  Yikes.  Looooooong trip.  Very nearly 900 miles, just short of it.

Went through places I've never been, ever, Maryland, Delaware, DC, Virginia.  Had no idea I would be going through Maryland or Delaware.  And HOW can those states, and New Jersey, charge so much toll for driving on a FEDERAL US PUBLIC Interstate (I-95, all of the pirates)???!!!!!  Outrageous.  Assholes.  Sorry, I am sidetracked now.  So what the heck, let me digress....

Last night, I did my farewell tour of my two Wild Wing Cafes in Atlanta area, first with Clint, my good friend, in Alpharetta, then in Suwanee.  Was really great to see Clint one last time, hopefully not for the last time.  Then in Suwanee, the folks were buying Jager shots for me big time, regulars there and bartenders.  Going to miss those folks in Suwanee a great deal.  Saw Dean & Wendy, the owners of both those Wings.  They know me very, very well, for many years now.  I told Dean my circumstances, and he kindly thanked me, very honestly, for all I had done for them.  And that I have...hell, I've kept the lights on at Wings in my time there at both stores ;)

Before I even went to Alpharetta Wings, I went to Friday's, where April is daytime bartender.  I thought I saw what looked like Todd's car in the parking lot, so I drove on through, didn't stop, went to Wings much earlier than I planned.  I was very sorry and disappointed to not see April one last time.  But I'm sure she knows I'll always love her.  April is a very special and incredible woman.  Not sure how God chose not to make more like her.  Many more men would be so much happier today.

Okay, back to today....because of the Jagers last night, my plan to LEAVE my house by 7 AM were completely foiled.  I was wiped out by them.  And I still had to pack!!  (last night)  Was up very late.....ended up oversleeping my alarms, and finally woke up in time to get everything packed up, coffee brewed, everything done by just after 9 AM....definitely not bad for me!  Unplugged EVERYTHING (almost), turned down water heater to nothing, turned down heat to lowest it would go on the control panel, 45 degrees.  Don't think I missed anything....but you never know I guess.  Knocked on Jim the neighbor's door to say bye to him.  No answer.  Dog looks at me from inside the house, and their 4 yr old boy wonders around the living room ignoring the very loud doorbell.  So I left.

9:19 AM, I'm on the road.  Damn near 16 hours later, I fired up my laptop in my hotel in Newark.  Almost 900 miles later.

No cops for most of the day, was surprised.  About 10 PM, the stealth patrols parked in the middle of the grass medians of interstates started appearing, lights off, ready to pounce.  I only did 5-10 MPH over the speed limit most of the way.  Exception to that is the NJ Turnpike late at night where I was FLYING, probably 20 MPH over the limit, with nobody hardly on the road.

I stopped in Raleigh, NC, at Carolina Ale House and Wild Wing Cafe there.  Saw three bartenders at Wings that knew me, I knew them, and I couldn't remember any of their names lol.  Kitty, now a server at Wings, formerly a bartender at Ale House next door, was not there :(  Said hi, left.  All that was after I spent an hour at Carolina Ale House.  Ate late lunch there, had two beers, saw three old regular friends and a bartender I knew from before.  That was nice.

I had detoured from a direct route to NJ in order to make that stop, but it was worth it.  The hour break came at a very good time, and it was a joy to see some old friends.

When going through DC, my GPS told me to get on the HOV lane...I said screw that!  But then I saw the sign flashing "No restricted traffic" or some such, so what the heck.  What a great move :)  I was flying by normal interstate traffic big time, and there was NOBODY in the HOV lanes!  For like almost 30 miles, the HOV was walled off from the normal interstate.  Made great time there.  At one point, I saw an exit for "Pentagon".  Passed it, then looked to my left, and said out loud to myself "HOLY SHIT!!!!!  That's the PENTAGON!!!"  It was right there by the interstate.  Not sure why that surprised me, but it did.  Never expected the Pentagon to be right by an interstate.  Then I saw the Washington Monument, the US Capitol, the White House, the Lincoln Memorial, I passed over the Potomac river.  This was all at night time, light traffic, everything well lit up, and I was able to look around quite a bit.  I was stunned.  It was all so beautiful.  I had chills actually.  I never thought I would ever see any of that.  Meant a lot to me for some reason.

Actually, my GPS took me right to Pennsylvania Avenue at one point...where the HOV ended for the interstate, and there was a huge van sitting on the shoulder.  I think I must have missed a sudden speed change waaaaay down (as the interstate was turning into a highway with stoplights), because I saw a huge flash in my mirror, at me, when I passed that big van.  This was real close to the White House, and the interstate continuing on to the White House (I presume) was completely blocked off.  No surprise there I guess.  So, I'm expecting a photo ticket in the mail for speeding now I guess.

At one point during my travels, there was an 18-wheeler in front of me, going really fast, in the passing lane.  Faster than I was going....he was passing traffic, and suddenly he turned on a really high-powered spotlight off his passenger side, aimed directly into the windshield of a car he was passing, an SUV.  I thought "What the fuck??!!"  Because even I was getting that light about 3-4 car slots back of the SUV.  That dude kept that spotlight on for quite a while actually, like two minutes or more.  Seemed forever.  Pulled out to pass the slower traffic, following the 18-wheeler, and that damned SUV had its bright lights on.  No wonder.  I flipped the MF off, as I had no high powered spotlight to pour on the idiot myself.  Yes, again, this was at night.

So, got to hotel, finally.  Hard to find, even with GPS.  Took some stuff to the room.  Um.  Where's the mini-fridge and microwave?  I thought they were supposed to have that stuff.  Asked the woman at front desk about it...."yes, we have rooms with those, but they are extra.  But since you are staying the week, I'll move you for free to a room with those."  I tipped her $20 :)

Hey, I only drank....um.....probably 8 or 9 Bud Lights on the road!  (shhhhhh, don't tell anyone)  Come on, it was a looooooooooooooong day........

So, I have time now to settle in a bit in Newark, NJ tomorrow, watch my Cowboys win against the Chargers hopefully tomorrow, and start my new job, and hopefully very temporary new life Monday with Blue Cross Blue Shield of NJ, AKA Armpit of the Universe.

I'll be looking to get away from here immediately.  SF and DC are still possibilities.  I'd love to get back to Atlanta if possible.  Basically anywhere else before the 10 cartons of Marlboro Lights I bought in Atlanta this morning are gone, 'cause I sure don't want to have to pay for a carton of those here!!!!!!!!  ;)

Thank God for cruise control and GPS  :)

Well.  Since you asked...

The company up in Newark is the worst I have ever worked for.  And I could not stand the area.  I lived in a hotel for a month...couldn't even bring myself to look for a more permanent place to live.  I never stopped looking for something else...anywhere else...and it came through a few days back.  Got a solid firm offer in Chicago, so yesterday I decided to up and leave Newark, and that job, 'cause I had an in-person interview today in DC.  That one went extremely well also.  Next week, I am expecting to have a decision to make between the two.  If DC offers, I'll take that one.  I'm in Raleigh/Durham area, NC, after driving from DC after interview.  Tomorrow will head back to my house in Atlanta, stay the week or so, pack out my stuff into storage, and get ready to leave to either Chicago or DC soon.

I have never been so sad for so long in my life, as I was in Newark at that company.  Grim grim grim.  One should not stay in a situation that makes them so unhappy.  The ironic thing about that Newark company is that they are in the health insurance industry...yet working for them sucks the life out of you.  Big time.

A tremendous weight has been lifted from me, I feel happy again.
