In case anyone is interested,  the new movie "2012" is a somewhat laughable version of Greg Bear's book "The Forge of God".  You might want to get the book from the library and compare it to the film.     To show how far CGI has come, according to the producers, when they destroyed Los Angeles the only thing real on the screen was the actors in the car.  Everything else was made up in the computer.

I'm up for the all out destruction of LA anytime, but hadn't decided on the movie... is it worth the money to go see, or is it just special effects with some vague plot to link the sequences together?

I've been aware of December 21, 2012 for decades.  End of the current, and final, Mayan long-count calender.  Amazingly, they knew of Precession - a full galactic rotation, which is what the long-count calendar was based on.  Their advanced knowledge of astronomy and mathematics is dumbfounding.  I find it almost incredulous that an ancient civilization could have developed such advanced knowledge in those areas without help.  And yes, I mean help from Visitors....

The mythology behind the Mayans and the calendar is mesmorizing (sp?).

Do I believe in it?  Half of me does.  Okay, more like 30% of me does.  But I would not be surprised either way at what happens on that day.

As for the film, haven't seen it, but want to.....soon as I get a job....

The date keeps getting closer and there are a number of sites telling of the various things that will happen.  There are some guys pitching how to survive then, and of course they are selling the information.  If they really believed it, they would be making the information available for free. You   might want to look them up as they make for interesting reading and are good for some laughs.  Heard a fellow on the radio the other day saying that is when the earth and sun drop into the black hole at the galactic center.  That's a good trick since the center is some 30,000 light years away.   To make it in two years we would have to be moving on a direct radial line to the center at 15,000 times the speed of light.  Don't think so.

The big problem is that nobody really knows for certain when the calendar started.  That was over 500 years ago.  I have heard ending dates all the way from 2004 to 2019.  For some reason there seems to be a consensus on 2012.   Take your pick.

The Sunday paper prints an Earth Week column.  One of the things it lists are earthquakes.  I have been tracking them for several years and the
average numbers and intensities haven't change very much.  It's all media hype.

Actually, according to the media ( depending on who you listen to ) earthquakes are caused by global warming, or was that Bush, or a combination
of both.  It would all be very confusing if it wasn't so silly.  (media hype, that is)

That's not too far out.  The current theory is that North America's interior earthquakes are cause by tectonic plate rebound.  The plate is lifting on the rebound because the weight of the mass glaciation has been removed by, you guessed it, global warming.  I'm still working on the "Blame it on Bush" angle.  (Sorry Van, had to sneak that one in. -:)

What I heard some time ago was that Bush was blamed for hurricane Katrina because he didn't sign the Kyoto protocalls.  I guess the same thinking goes for the earthquakes too.  Shows how lame some peoples thought processes get.

We probably import enough foreign cars and other stuff each year to make up for that weight  ;D
