Take-off is optional. Landing is mandatory.
« on: September 08, 2009, 10:33:49 AM »

His request approved, the Fox News photographer quickly used a cell phone to call the local airport to charter a flight. He was told a twin engine plane would be waiting for him at the airport.

Arriving at the airfield, he spotted a plane warming up outside a hanger. He jumped in with his bag, slammed The door shut, and shouted, 'Let's go.'

The pilot taxied out, swung the plane into the wind and Took off. Once in the air, the photographer instructed the pilot, `Fly over the valley and make low  passes so I can take pictures of the fires on the hillsides.'

'Why?' asked the  pilot.

'Because I'm a photographer for Fox Cable News,' he responded.  'And I need to get some close up shots.'

The pilot was strangely silent for a moment. Finally he Stammered, 'So, what you're telling me is . . . You're NOT my Flight Instructor?

And all I could think of was what the explanation would be for the air traffic controller in the tower.... :)

Most airports don't have a tower. If they're VFR (Visual flight rules), they don't have to talk to anybody on the radio unless they're in some special controlled airspace. Even then, they usually don't have to talk to a controller until they're airborne because most controlled airspace doesn't start until several thousand feet above ground level unless you're right next to a major airport or in a restricted military airspace.

The controlled airspace around a major airport like Atlanta Hartsfield is shaped like an upside down wedding cake. Only the little part in the middle touches the ground. The farther away you go, the higher the bottom of the controlled airspace gets. Just a short distance from Hartsfield, the bottom of the controlled airspace is 4000 feet.

Note: I haven't flown in years so some rules might have changed but it's amazing how much uncontrolled airspace their is in the US, until you reach about 18000 feet above sea level.

I pretty much open the window and announce in a loud voice

" I am taking off now"

LOL!!! The scariest takeoffs that I saw were the ones by the Forestry service pilots. I once saw 5 of their planes take off at the same time - no radio calls  - using 2 intersecting runways and all 5 taking off at the same time going TOWARDS the ends that intersected... They didn't pay any attention to the wind either. On a busy day you'd be coming in for a landing and without any type of radio call, you'd see one or two of them taxi out on the runway and take off in the wrong direction - facing you!!!

A bush pilot in Alaska was taxing to the runway getting ready to take off.  The conditions, as is quite often the case, were not the greatest.
The controller in the tower high off the ground could see better and was giving the pilot instructions.
"Bear to the right', he said to the pilot.
The reply came back from the plane, "I see him".
