Where do Team-SciFi members apply their computer resources? We participate in both stand-alone and BOINC-based DC projects. If there is a challenge, or even a “flavor of the month”, resource allocations between projects can fluctuate dramatically. Team-SciFi tries to be active in all BOINC projects, although production-release and established beta-release science-heavy projects tend to draw the most team attention and resources.
If you are interested in an established project not listed below, check to see if Team-SciFi has a presence and join us there. You might help rejuvenate interest in that project!
Active Team-SciFi stand-alone DC projects * Seventeen or Bust (SOB)
http://www.seventeenorbust.com/ Mathematical project to prove the Sierpinski Conjecture. At the time it started, there were seventeen candidates left. The project discovered its 11th prime in OCT 2007.
A positive number k is a Sierpinski number if there are no primes of the form k.2n+1 for any positive number n (for k < 2n).The lowest known Sierpinski number is 78557. The Sierpinski conjecture states that this is the lowest Sierpinski number, but this remains unproven.
* Folding@Home
http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/ Understand protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases such as Alzheimer’s, cancer, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s, CJD, ALS, mad-cow (BSE), and others. Folding@Home is working with Sony and other developers of the Cell chip used in the Playstation 3 to run its client on that machine. Despite the relatively small number of users, Playstation 3 contributors are providing about 80% of all Folding@Home results, on the order of 1.7 PFLOPs.
There are also several BETA tests underway to develop a stand-alone client to use your graphics processor (ATI HD26xx class or better), or run on multi-processor or multi-core machines. Each of the specialized clients however works against a limited type of folding problem, while the basic Folding@Home client on a CPU works against a wide variety of folding problems.
